Posting in case others face this challenge. I had a terrible time getting the included external microphone working. After much fiddling with software, I realized it was a simple hardware problem. The microphone jack is simply too fat to fit through the hole in the EVplay box to access the recessed receptacle. Filing down the plastic grip and or widening the hole in the box by hand with a drill bit solves the problem.
