Wired CarPlay Questions

One of the biggest selling points for EVplay for me is the wired CarPlay aspects. I know that sounds weird, but I've got one of the 3rd party screen solutions and it's been very annoying. I can't really make use of my Connect+ HotSpot easily because my phone's WiFi connection is tied up doing CarPlay, and even then the audio quality is still just BlueTooth levels.

I know wired CarPlay has been mentioned, but nothing really described about it. I know the box appears to have like 4 USB A slots, if we plug in a USB cable and connect the phone, is that all there is to doing wired CarPlay? What about power for charging, do any of the USB ports provide enough power to charge the phone, or will I still need another cable to charge my phone as well? If I can charge from the wired CarPlay connection, any suggestions on routing the cable over to the driver's side footwell before I route it up the dash? If I can't charge from the USB connection, then I'll probably just go with an OBDII power adapter to a magnetic charge mount.

Looking forward to the install, I recently put in a Comma 3X so I'm familiar with the are, and once I get this in I can button everything up nice and clean again.

Trey, great question. It does come with 4 USB ports plus another dedicated USB port just for wired Android Auto & CarPlay. I will say though, on a lot of phones the use of Android Auto & CarPlay sucks a lot of power, and so even when it is plugged in via the wired connection, it tends to either maintain the same charge or use slightly more than it charges at, depending on the phone. A couple of solutions exist, such as a "Y" adapter (Amazon) that allow you to plug in to another USB port and charge at a higher rate. You could also use the wireless pad on the Rivian if your phone supports that.

As for routing, super easy to tuck a USB cord around and under the center HVAC vents. You could even get fancy and install a USB port right there, as some have done when they removed power from later R1 models.

Let me know if that helps!

@evplayadmin can you expand more on where the usb ports go in the HVAC? Can you link to some post where this was done? Maybe with photos.

I would love if you could post video setup of wired carplay configuration once you have time.

thanks much for the product. Working great for me!

Great to hear!

Here is one using the odb port on the opposite side, but I like how clean the usb port install is:

Addendum to my original question, now that i’ve got evplay installed and i’m using wired carplay, is there a way to do the audio on the same wire? I can only get audio via bluetooth to Rivian Audio. If i toggle off bluetooth, no more sound. It seems the Android system must be able to send audio to the Rivian, but i haven’t tried that yet. Maybe the setup there is to also connect evplay to Rivian Audio via bluetooth?

Not a deal killer, it just would get rid of some annoying bluetooth audio issues i experience and maybe have a better audio sound experience, and from what i’ve read Wired CarPlay can do audio over wire, but if evplay can do it, i haven’t found the right settings.

@troy Unfortunately not. Only the native apps on the Rivian have a direct connection to its audio system. Maybe some time in the future I can look at creating a device that interfaces directly to the Rivian amplifier.

@evplayadmin Ok, that’s what i figured. The plus side to still using bluetooth is that it’ll start playing whatever you were listening to faster than having to connect up a wire. And i’m still getting what i had hoped for, ability to have my phone use the hotspot. Plus a huge screen and no more second screen taking up space.

If wired audio ends up on the roadmap, cool, but definitely not before improving stability of the system. I’ve gotten some new error codes the last two days that needed to have the full reboot to clear. It’s not necessarily evplay for sure, but i do wonder about that canbus connection.

@troy Let me know which error codes they are, so I can at least log them. I have heard from a few folks that just the act of hard resetting has "shaken loose" a few Rivian error notifications, although they have all resolved themselves after a deep sleep.

@evplayadmin I took pics this time, i think it’s the second time i’ve seen this grouping of errors. First time i did the hazard reset cause it was showing the turtle, this time i wasn’t too far from home so tried it out. Was able to get up over 50mph, didn’t try to find the ceiling as i was mostly on surface streets.

Not sure it’ll let me upload both pics, second one was saying regen braking assist unavailable, but it felt like it was to me. Hold was not working though, i had to use the brake pedal to not roll back at lights.

This morning it was a red motor error of some kind, said something like drive unit failure, and it wouldn’t let me shift out of park so i had to reboot.

Anything i can do to help get logs from the evplay unit to you? I picked up a usb a to a cable that supports usb 3, so i might be able to get on the laptop, but i may also need a hub cause i have a macbook pro without a usb a port, if the usbc adapter doesn’t work.

@troy Don't think it is related to the EV Play install, unless you shorted something during the install. In most of these cases a deep overnight sleep resolved the issue, but let me know if otherwise.

@evplayadmin Yeah, so far the pattern for me seems to involve starting a drive within 5-30 minutes of another drive. The most recent errors cleared on their own while i was watching a movie, so long enough sleep seems to be a factor in not having errors on the next drive. I only noticed the screen switching issue after the first reboot. The second time it switched very soon after it booted up.

Just an update on the errors the Rivian was frequently encountering this weekend. After someone in another forum said there seems to be a correlation with power draw on start up, in particular when pressing the brake pedal, I decided to test that theory out. I had both EVPlay and Comma using fuse taps from the passenger fuse panel, but I also had an OBD power cable for the Comma I had never used. So I plugged that in and swapped the Comma over to it, and in an afternoon of driving around and making stops, the error codes didn't come back. I did have one session where EVPlay would switch just fine, the screen wasn't frozen, but touch screen was not responsive at all. EVPlay touch screen worked again after the next stop. Tried long click of the remote, unplugged the wired CarPlay, but touch screen was no go until the next drive.

The Comma only ever booted up once because OBD is constant power, so not super ideal long term. I may look at seeing if running a fuse tap from the driver's side for the Comma solves the issue.

@troy Thinking outside the box, but you could buy a relay off Amazon and modify the odb line to turn on/off based on the switched source we tap in to. If you need a diagram feel free to reach out.

I just and used 2 short usb extensions (one for some storage one for carplay) to get the usb out up there in the passenger footwell. These usb's are not visible in the car at all. And the cable from it lies at the bottom, it is easy to connect the phone. I also use the usb, because for some reason everything works very badly over the air.
