Wireless remote alternatives?

I keep seeing this wireless remote being referenced, I assume it will come with one remote so are there any alternatives? Will the device have a gpio block that we could use for contact closures to operate the switching trigger?

If that one Wireless remote is the only way to trigger the screen switch I feel like that would be an oversight as you're limiting accessibility both in terms of those with physical disabilities as well as accessibility for other devices to interact. Perhaps I need to use a foot switch or I would want the passenger to also have their own switch, I would need a way to wire that in.

I also work in environments with extremely high RF interference, to the point where the Bluetooth remote won't work nor will garage door openers, will this prevent me from switching the screen? - yes, it will if it's Bluetooth or one of the standard 2.4g or 900mhz devices common in the US.

- plus I wouldn't want to rely on a battery, especially during winter when batteries don't last very long when it's - 20F out....

Thanks!

The device ships with one small wireless push button remote but you will be able to purchase additional remotes from our Website.

And yes, you could hack it to provide a wired remote instead of the wireless relay, or replace it with another type of wireless technology such as BT or Wi-Fi.

Additionally, I'm currently working on an Alexa skill to see if it is possible to trigger it that way.

I am curious about one thing though. If one has a disability that prevents them from operating a push button remote, how does that same person currently operate the touch screen, get in to the center console, turn on the windshield wipers, or open the door on a 2nd gen?

@evplayadmin So is there anything like a GPIO block on the device or by "hack it" do you mean needing to disassemble a remote and repurpose the wireless function?

There are many assistive devices out there that allow people with various disabilities to drive. I'm merely pointing out that maybe a wireless remote isn't the most practical solution for everyone or the form factor may be less desirable to some.

If I can't use (or don't want to rely on) wireless in a certain location, does that mean I cannot trigger the switch with a wired button? Yes or No?

Thanks!

By "hack" I mean modifying EV Play to use a wired momentary switch instead of the wireless button. However, if you are unable to operate Bluetooth & WiFi in your environment, it sounds like the button issue might be moot. That's because CarPlay & Android Auto on EV Play both use a combination of Bluetooth, Wi-fi, and cellular. How do you envision overcoming those obstacles?

Thank you for the answer! So wired switch triggering will be supported.

My main concern is less that I will be able to use it and more that I'll be able to get it off my screen when I am in said environment.

Such as using Android Auto on the way there, arriving on site, need to switch back to Rivian's interface. Not having to remember to do so before getting into the "interference" area is my problem scenario. 🙂

Could you consider doing something like the 4-finger tap that Teslogic Screenmate does? (see the video at https://teslogic.co/pages/screenmate )

It was considered but the push button is a far better experience. It's more reliable, faster, and it can be triggered without taking your eyes off the road. It also doesn't create a situation where the Rivian UI is modified, which gets in to a gray area with respect to warranty coverage.

For example, you can add webhook optionaly, and then people who have home assistant can add it to alexa

Or you can add some function on android (with function like button) and then we can use home assistant android app for automate it with alexa =)

I am actually working on this as we speak!

@ddjetwani On the right side by the center console is pretty inconspicuous. Or under the center HVAC vents, or between the HVAC vents and the steering wheel. These are all spots where you don't really see it.
