For those concerned about warranty issues and generally how this is working and what side effects may be caused, can you please provide a system level diagram that shows which wires/connections this device is connecting to, and what native connection paths are rerouted to make this work?

A complete video installation guide link will be provided in the box. EV Play is considered an aftermarket "add-on" and does not modify your existing hardware or software. Therefore, it will not affect your warranty coverage.

@evplayadmin

I don't think many of us are concerned about the warranty, we are more concerned that we are driving a giant computer and EV Play will somehow be tapping into the car. I personally want to know more about how the connection works from a safety standpoint. Modifications could be potentially dangerous (fatally so), and I think you will sell a lot more units if people know how it works.

Totally agree with @rosstheboss, the safety and ramifications of exactly what is going on behind the scenes matters here.  Unless I have a very clear understanding of exactly what EVPlay is doing, and how it's being achieved, I won't be adding it to my vehicle, and I will cancel my pre-order.  I understand that @evplayadmin likely is trying to "protect" what he's spent time to reverse engineer, and doesn't want others to copy cat him.  However, this is an involved enough modification of the system that I won't be using it unless one of the two things is true:

- Rivian issues a statement saying that using this product is OK and won't void the warranty in any way, and they are OK with the methods being used.

- I completely understand what EVPlay is doing, and therefore am willing to take the risk without Rivian making a statement on the topic.

@jrwagz

My thoughts exactly. I was going to pre-order, but need to understand the safety issues at play.

@rosstheboss @jrwagz I think the level of scrutiny you both have here is a bit unfounded and you should both probably wait until it's been fully released before diving in. Rivian will never sign off on this or any similar device.

Personally, I don't see this as any more invasive than an aftermarket radio. Infact even less so than the Comma AI autopilot systems that are coming out.

I've tuned and modified cars for years and this will be the most painless install I can imagine. Remember this is completely reversible and is likely only reading information from the standard CAN bus interface and also remapping the display output and touch control to the EV play device with the quick button switch. Seems rather calm to me.

My request is really quite simple: what connections to the car does this device make?

We don’t even know that much, and it’s not very clear why.

yes, this seems like super cool tech, and I’m definitely interested in it.  However I am not the main driver of my R1S, and I’ll be the one getting tech support calls when it doesn’t work, so that’s why I want to know how it works before I pull the trigger.  It’s not a crazy ask, every device on the market publishes their installation video and diagrams ahead of time so people can have a clear understanding of how the device is connected, and then they get a general idea of how it works and what could go wrong.  With this device today, we have none of that information.  All I’m saying is that if I can’t get that information before I have to give the rest of the $$ for the device, then I’ll likely be giving a pass until there is less smoke and mirrors.

Look, I completely understand that the lack of information surrounding installation is maddening. As mentioned above, I am trying to maintain a lead over the countless copycats that will knock this off, as well as deter any efforts to cut this route off in the R2 (one can dream, right?). Is that deterring sales? Absolutely. Is it worth it to stave off competition as long as I can? Also, absolutely.

Plenty of folks are adopting a wait and see approach and that's 100% fine. I would recommend doing just that before canceling your pre-order however, otherwise, you will be get placed at the end of a very long line. Well, long enough to crash a website. :/

@rosstheboss think of EV Play, partly, like a 2 in 1 monitor switch. It doesn't modify the connected monitors and computers, and certainly doesn't void their warranties.

@evplayadmin thank you! I think this is all that is really needed to squash most safety concerns since this isn’t interrupting any car features or modifying any systems, just switching the video signal to the monitor. This is exactly what I was hoping for.
