Switching to EVPlay stopped. Had to full reset Rivian to return functionality.

I installed EVPlay and 14 hours later I could not longer switch to EVPlay via the button. I had to full reset (outter left steering wheel button + hazard button) - not soft rest (two outer most steering buttons) to restore function.

I will update this thread if the issue persists.

Is this Gen 2? It would be helpful, if you have access to the unit, to see if the unit's fan is running the next time this happens. Thanks!

Sorry - I should have included my installation details...

  • Gen1
  • R1T
  • CarPlay

If it happens again, I will open up the environment and observe.

I will add, when I was doing the install and I provided power to the unit, the fan did not spin. I had to verify power by observing a red light turn on inside the unit.

@stewdapew There are two sources of power for the device. The yellow wire provides power to the module that keeps the screens connected and powered. The red wire is switched and tells the Android device to boot and shut down, depending on if you are occupying the vehicle. When the Android device turns on, the fan spins and there is also a blue flashing light inside the case, which is easier to see at night.

If the device is successfully switching but the fan is not spinning, I would want to send you a replacement unit.

Please make sure the video connector to the infotainment system is seated fully and secure, as we use that for the ground.

I’ve had this same issue twice now. I can hear clicking from the switch-over button, red light on but no fan.

Unplugging power and plugging back in gets fan going again and I can switch over to EV Play.

@evplayadmin Thought?

That describes the behavior I have with my replacement unit (gen1 R1T) as well.

Seems to happen daily.

Update:
I wanted some time to pass to ensure my changes worked or did not.
I relocated the EVPlay unit, aligning its fan with the ventilation openings in the plastic under the dash.
Since the relocation - 100% correct behavior. No issues switching. No loss of console display. It's been great.

@stewdapew had similar concerns when I installed to make sure venting was adequate especially as existing infotainment system has large heat sink that’s very hot.

My issues continue. Seems to need a reboot everyday. Fan stops spinning. Unplug/replug of power (yellow/red) gets it going again. My box is mounted on the flat plastic part where a normal glovebox would be. Wires have plenty of slack, fan has room to breathe.

@evplayadmin any idea?

@mattevplay
Mine did this today. It was working normally all weekend and earlier today. This evening leaving work it was fine, then I stopped at a Walmart for 10 mins and it would not power on. No lights but the Rivian screen was showing up normally. At home after 2 hrs still not powering up, so I unplugged the power cable and then plugged it back in and it showed up normally again. Gen2 R1S DPMax

It is just attached to the carpet above the  all weather mats with velcro fan facing out, well ventilated for easy access while I am trying to see if it will be stable.

  Seeing that many of the issues require to determine if EVplay is running. I don’t have any issues with my unit but I can tell you to determine if the unit was getting power would be a royal PIA.  Wish there was a simpler way to determine that other than taking my dash apart.

Mine still must have been getting power even though the red and blue lights were not on.  The main Rivian UI was still on so my understanding is the constant power from the yellow wire was still hot.  The other wire I did not test with a multimeter, but all I did was unplug the power cable from the EVPlay and plug it back in without doing any reset to the Rivian and it powered right back up, which makes me think it is something with the EV play going to sleep?  I wonder if putting a simple switch on that wire would allow a quick "reboot"
